Preparation and Hydrochloric Acid-adsorption Properties of Polystyrene Composite Microspheres
To develop high-performance acid-blocking adsorbents
this study designed a series of brominated poly(styrene-b-butadiene) block copolymers (BMPSB)
which were dispersed within styrene phase during suspension polymerization to prepare quaternized polystyrene composite microspheres (PS@BMPSB). Three types of poly(styrene-
b
-butadiene) copolymers (PSB-50
PSB-60
PSB-70) with varying butadiene block lengths were synthesized using living anionic polymerization
and subsequently brominated with tetrabutylammonium tribromide to obtain BMPSB-50
BMPSB-60
and BMPSB-70. The effects of BMPSB type and dosage on the morphology
particle size distribution
and enrichment of surface functional groups of the composite microspheres were systematically investigated. The results indicated that the higher the polybutadiene segment content in PS@BMPSB
the smaller the microsphere particle size; when the BMPSB-50 dosage was 30 wt%
the resulting microspheres exhibited the highest surface bromine content
reaching 9.72%
with a particle size of 205.14 μm and good dispersion. Studies on adsorption performance showed that the static adsorption of hydrochloric acid by these microspheres reached equilibrium withi
n 6 min
conforming to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and the Langmuir isotherm
with a maximum adsorption capacity of 46.84 mmol/g. In dynamic adsorption experiments
the breakthrough volume was 0.6 BV. During the initial elution stage
the high acid concentration allowed for direct recovery. After 10 cycles
the exchange capacity of the microspheres remained at over 80% of the initial value
demonstrating excellent regeneration stability. This study provides a novel
highly efficient adsorbent material for the acid-blocking method and offers experimental evidence for the structural design of functionalized polystyrene microspheres.
