To improve the dispersion stability of carbon black in water
the grafting of watersoluble polymer poly-(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) onto carbon black (CB) was achieved by the radical polymerization of the corresponding monomers in the presence of CB under ultrasonic irradiation. This technique could generate efficient polymerization of sodium 4-styrenesulfonate (NaSS) in the presence of CB in a rapid reaction at relatively low temperature. The grafted amount of polymer on CB was assessed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA).In addition
molecular weight and molecular weight distribution of the ungrafted polymer was tracked by gel permeation chromatography (GPC).The influences of ultrasonic time and power output on grafting ratio were also investigated.Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT_IR) was used to determine the chemical structure of the resulting products.Particle analysis indicated that the diameters of the obtained grafted carbon black (GCB) particles were smaller than those of original CB particles.TEM photographs showed that PSS were attached on the surface of carbon black
and the conglomeration degree of GCB decreased apparently. The results of zeta potential measurements revealed that the GCB surface had more negative charges than the original CB.Accordingly
UV transmission measurements conformed that the dispersion stability of GCB in water was improved apparently than that of initial CB.Because of the attachment of polyelectrolyte to the CB surface the grafted CB could be well dispersed in water.
