A novel flame-retardant and anti-dripping copolyester (PBPET) was synthesized by polycondensation of terephthalic acid (TPA) and ethylene glycol (EG) with bis(hydroxyethylether) of bisphenol A (BHEEB) and [(6-oxido-6H-dibenz[c
e]1
2]oxaphosphorin-6-yl)methyl]butanedioic acid (DDP). The chemical structure of the PBPET was characterized with 1H-NMR spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES)
and the thermal stability was investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The flammability of the copolyesters was characterized by the limiting oxygen index (LOI) and UL-94 vertical test. TGA results suggested that BHEEB could effectively improve the thermal stability of the copolyesters
and the residues of PBPET at 600℃ in N2 (wt600R) reached 18.0 wt%. The flame-retardant tests proved that by incorporating both BHEEB and DDP into the polyesters
the resulting copolyesters exhibited expected flame retardance with an LOI value of 37.0 and a UL-94 V-0 rating. Moreover
the anti-dripping behavior of the copolyesters was improved by the incorporation of BHEEB.
