A series of crosslinkers(polyethylene glycol diacrylate
PEGDA) with different molecular weights were synthesized through end-capping of PEG by acryloyl chloride. The structures of the PEGDAs were characterized by FTIR.The water-absorbency of sodium polyacrylate crosslinked with PEGDAs was determined. In the experiments of water-swelling in deionized water
it was revealed that when the molecular weight of the crosslinker increased
the maximum of equilibrium water-absorbability of the synthesized superabsorbents was enhanced and the rate of water-swelling increased too
but the relative rate of water-swelling decreased. The relationship between the network structure of the superabsorbents and the water-absorbency was also discussed.Comparing PEGDA and MBA
the superabsorbents crosslinked with the former had much stronger water-absorbability
fewer residual monomers and less dissoluble linear polymers than the one crosslinked with the latter.
