The effects of maleic anhydride grafted thermoplastic elastomer (TPEg) as a compatilizer on the compatibility
morphology and performance of polypropylene/polyamide6 blends were studied. The results showed that TPEg greatly improved the compatibility of the blends. With an increase in TPEg content in the blend
the size of minor component domains decreased greatly and the notched Izod impact strength and elongation at break of the final blends improved obviously. The non-isothermal crystallization behaviors of PP and PA6 in the blends were different from those in their pure polymers. The crystallization temperature of PP was promoted by the PA6 component due to its nucleating effect. While a fractionated crystallization was detected for PA6 when TPEg was used
the first crystallization occurred at a temperature slightly lower than the Tc of pure PA6
and was reduced with increasing TPEg content in the blends;the second crystallization happened coincidently with the crystallization of PP.The strong interactions between PP or PA6 and TPEg at the interface increased the Tg of the both the PP and PA6 domains in the blends
Based on these observations
a microstructure schematic model was proposed for the PP/PA6/TPEg and PP/PA6/TPE blends.
