o′ diallyl bisphenol A ether (DBAE) grafted polyethylene (DBAE-g-PE) as a compatibilizer to improve the compatibility of the polycarbonate/polyethylene alloy.An amazing toughening phenomenon was observed in the alloy containing 15phr PC and 5phr DBAE g PE through testing the impact strength and the critical strain energy release rate(G1C ).The results from the fracture surfaces of the polycarbonate/polyethylene alloy observed by a scanning electron microscope (SEM) indicate that the neat alloy without compatibilizer displayed a brittle fracture morphology
while for the alloy compatiblized with DBAE-g-PE
both matrix and dispersed phase had high surfacial contact
and the dispersed polycarbonate particles were plastically deformed into fibres
which was brought out beacause of the impact compressure exerted by the PE matrix in the process of impacting and the exellent compatible effect between PC and PE caused by the dompatibilizer
DBAE-g-PE.A fibre formation based toughening mechanism was preaented
combined with a structural diagram
to analysize the amazing toughening phenomenon in the compatibilized polycarbonate/polyethylene alloy.
