A kind of ion-type hydrophilic comonomer was synthesized and utilized in the IBMA/MMA/BA emulsifier-free emulsion polymerization system.The particle size and flow behavior of the latexes
dynamic mechanical properties
tensile behavior
and water resistance of the copolymers
as well as the nucleation mechanism of latex particles were investigated.The experimental results showed that with the addition of hydrophilic ion-type reactive comonomer
latexes with particle size of about 0.6μm can be obtained and the solid content of stable latexes can reach as high as 60%
showing Bimgham flow characteristics.Only a single glass transition temperature appeared in the dynamic mechanical spectra indicating atactic copolymers were obtained.The tensile strength and water resistance are higher than those of samples parpared by conventional emulsion polymerization method.
