Aqueous polymerization of methyl methacrylate initiated by copper chloride-sodium sulfite redox pair was investigated under the close air atmosphere and without shaking. The overall rate of polymerization (RP) isThe covering atmosphere affects the polymerization process markedly. Oxygen retards the polymerization
but it is able to oxidize Cu+ to Cu2+.As a result
it shows the lower overall rate of polymerization
higher collision frequency factor and overall activation energy of polymerization. Mechanism of initiation was proposed and discussed.
