Two-dimensional covalent organic frameworks (2D-COFs)
featuring highly ordered crystalline porous architectures and tailorable molecular structures
have attracted considerable attention in gas separation
molecular adsorption
photocatalysis
and energy conversion. Despite extensive studies on their electronic and ionic transport properties
the thermal transport behavior of 2D-COFs remains insufficiently understood. As a class of organic semiconducting porous polymers
the thermal conductivity of 2D-COFs is strongly correlated with their electronic structures and phonon transport characteristics
in which electron-phonon coupling plays a crucial role in governing lattice thermal transport. In this work
bipyridine-containing 2D-COFs were employed as model systems to systematically investigate the influence of metal-ion doping with distinct d-orbital electronic configurations on el
ectron-phonon coupling behavior and thermal transport properties. The results demonstrated that the introduced metal ions could effectively modulate the local electronic states and electron delocalization through orbital hybridization between the metal d orbitals and the
π
-conjugated framework of the COFs. Meanwhile
the coordinated metal centers acted as localized anchoring sites that restrict local vibrational degrees of freedom of the framework
thereby suppressing electron-phonon coupling strength and reducing phonon scattering arising from low-frequency lattice vibrations. Consequently
enhanced lattice thermal transport and increased thermal conductivity were achieved. Furthermore
the differences in d-orbital electronic configurations were found to induce distinct orbital coupling strengths and charge delocalization behaviors
which critically determined the electron-phonon coupling characteristics and phonon transport efficiency. This study elucidates the intrinsic relationship between electronic structure modulation and phonon transport in ion-doped 2D-COFs
providing new insights into thermal transport mechanisms in crystalline organic porous materials. The findings further establish an effective strategy for optimizing the thermal transport performance of 2D-COFs through synergistic regulation of molecular structure and electronic states.
